Some mornings begin with sunshine, and there seems to be a spring in your step. You get up and there is no wrong side of the bed. Coffee is just a convenience on days like this, as you are already on a natural high.
Then there are mornings when you don’t want to get out of bed. The clouds are low and rain is approaching. The bed is comfortable, and if you move from this spot, it’s not just going to rain—it’s going to pour.
Of course, that means you will NEED coffee!
There is something wonderfully reassuring about knowing that no matter what kind of morning greets you, a good cup of coffee is waiting.
On the bright mornings, coffee joins the celebration. You pour a cup, open the curtains, and breathe in the possibilities of a new day. The aroma is pleasant, the warmth is comforting, and that first sip seems to say, Yes, this is going to be a good day.
But on those gray mornings? Coffee has a different assignment.
It has to coax you from beneath the covers.
The alarm may have failed to inspire you. The weather certainly isn’t helping. Your list of things to do is already competing with your desire to do absolutely nothing. Then you hear the familiar sounds from the kitchen. Water begins to heat. Coffee begins to brew. And slowly, that unmistakable aroma makes its way through the house.
Suddenly, getting out of bed doesn’t seem quite so unreasonable.
That may be one of the things I love most about coffee. It meets us where we are.
It doesn’t require a perfect morning.
Coffee can accompany a sunrise on the porch or a thunderstorm against the window. It can be enjoyed during a quiet moment before everyone else wakes up or carried hurriedly out the door in a travel mug. It can be part of an exciting beginning or simply the little bit of encouragement we need to face an ordinary Tuesday.
And perhaps that’s why drinking coffee feels like more than consuming a beverage.
It’s a ritual.
You wrap your hands around a warm mug. You breathe in the aroma before taking that first sip. For just a moment, you stop rushing. There is warmth. There is flavor. There is comfort.
And somehow, the day feels a little more manageable.
We can’t control whether the morning arrives with sunshine or storm clouds. We can’t guarantee that we’ll wake up energized and ready to conquer the world. Some mornings will find us bouncing out of bed, while others will require considerably more negotiation.
But either way, there’s coffee.
So when the sun is shining, pour a cup and celebrate the morning.
And when the clouds are gathering, the rain is coming, and your bed refuses to release you?
Make it a strong one.
Some mornings coffee is a pleasure. Other mornings, it’s a strategy.
