There is something especially satisfying about making hot chocolate from scratch. The ingredients are simple, the preparation is easy, and within just a few minutes you can have a warm, creamy cup of chocolate goodness.
Ingredients
- 2 cups milk
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons sugar, or sweetener of your choice
- ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- 2 ounces semi-sweet or dark chocolate, finely chopped (optional, but delicious)
Instructions
- Warm the milk.
Pour the milk into a small saucepan and warm it over medium-low heat. You want the milk hot and steamy, but avoid bringing it to a boil. - Mix the cocoa and sugar.
In a small bowl, combine the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Add a few tablespoons of the warm milk and stir until you have a smooth paste. This little step helps prevent lumps in your hot chocolate. - Combine.
Stir the cocoa mixture into the warm milk. If you’re using chopped chocolate, add it now and continue stirring until the chocolate has completely melted and the mixture is smooth and creamy. - Add the vanilla.
Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. - Pour and enjoy.
Pour the hot chocolate into your favorite mug. Add whipped cream, marshmallows, chocolate shavings, or a light sprinkle of cocoa powder if you’d like.
A Little Something Extra
If you’re a coffee lover like me, try adding a small shot of espresso or a splash of strongly brewed coffee. The combination of coffee and chocolate creates a wonderfully rich homemade mocha—a perfect way to bring two comforting favorites together.
And if you’re making hot chocolate for children, let them choose their own toppings. Sometimes the little extras—the marshmallows, the whipped cream, the chocolate drizzle—are what turn an ordinary cup of cocoa into a special occasion.
After all, making hot chocolate isn’t just about preparing a drink.
It’s about making something warm, comforting, and worth slowing down to enjoy.
