You toss and turn. You stretch and roll, but for whatever reason you don’t seem to get comfortable. Too hot one minute and too cold the next. You are not awake, but you are not asleep either. You are in that place of ambivalence—not here or there.

This kind of night usually means you have important matters pressing on you. Tough decisions to make or perhaps even doubt about a decision you have already made. Your mind keeps working when your body desperately wants to rest. You think about what happened yesterday, what might happen tomorrow, and everything you wish you could figure out right now.

The only hope you have is that when you wake up, there will be a new mercy waiting—along with a cup of coffee.

On mornings like that, it’s hard to get going. The heaviness of the night persists even while the sun is shining. The world outside your window seems to be moving along just fine, completely unaware that you spent half the night wrestling with thoughts and questions.

But morning has arrived anyway.

The coffee pot doesn’t care that you didn’t sleep. It faithfully does what it was designed to do. Water heats. Coffee grounds surrender their flavor. The familiar aroma begins to fill the kitchen. There is something comforting about that first smell of coffee in the morning. For a few moments, nothing is required of you except to be there.

Perhaps that is one of the gifts of a morning ritual.

We often think we need to have everything figured out before we can move forward. We want answers before we take the next step. We want certainty before we make the decision. We want to know how everything will work out.

But sometimes the morning comes before the answers do.

And maybe that’s okay.

There are some things that cannot be solved at three o’clock in the morning. Some decisions need time. Some questions need prayer. Some burdens simply need to be carried one day at a time.

So I make my coffee.

I pour the water into the reservoir, measure the grounds, and press the button. I listen to the familiar sounds of the coffee maker doing its work. Soon enough, I have a warm cup in my hands.

The problems haven’t necessarily disappeared. The decision may still need to be made. The uncertainty may still be there.

But I am here.

And there is something about being given another morning that deserves our attention.

Another sunrise. Another opportunity. Another chance to get it right—or perhaps to simply keep going when getting it right isn’t yet possible.

The Bible tells us that God’s mercies are new every morning (Lamentation 3:23). I like that thought. It means that yesterday’s mistakes don’t get to claim today’s morning. Yesterday’s worries don’t get to determine everything about today. And yesterday’s unanswered questions don’t mean there won’t be an answer tomorrow.

Sometimes new mercy looks like a solution.

Sometimes it looks like strength.

Sometimes it looks like peace.

And sometimes, at least in my kitchen, it looks like a fresh pot of coffee.

So if you had one of those nights—the kind where sleep never quite found you—I hope you remember this when morning comes:

You made it through the night.

The sun came up.

There is a new day in front of you.

And somewhere between the first sip of coffee and the first decision of the day, you may discover that you have enough grace for today.

There are nights when you hardly sleep a wink.
