I’d take a deep breath and blow until the bubbles were spilling over the edges of my cup. I’d play with these tasty bubbles until I’d receive a gentle rebuke—“Stop playing with your food.”

Even as an adult I can’t resist the urge to make milk bubbles. Of course, I don’t use a straw anymore, I use a frothing tool!

A frothing tool is basically a tiny mixer that can whip up milk into a creamy foam. Adding this creamy foam seems to make any cup just a bit magical. Coffee, tea, and cocoa are all enhanced when a dollop is placed on top.

And maybe that’s what I love most about the ritual of a warm cup. It’s not really about the beverage.

It’s about the moment.

There is something comforting about wrapping your hands around a warm mug and taking a few minutes to simply pause. No rushing. No answering. No fixing. No performing.

Just you, your cup, and a moment to think.

I have come to believe that we need more moments like that.

We need moments to reflect on where we’ve been.

Moments to prioritize what really matters.

Moments to strategize about where we’re going next.

And, perhaps most importantly, moments to enjoy the win.

Because somewhere along the way, we became really good at celebrating the finish line but terrible at recognizing the small victories that got us there.

We celebrate the promotion but forget to celebrate the courage it took to apply.

We celebrate the completed project but forget the dozen times we had to start over.

We celebrate the goal but forget the days when simply getting up and trying again was the victory.

That’s why I have become increasingly interested in the idea of winners and learners.

Not winners and losers.

Learners.

Because what if we stopped labeling people—and ourselves—as losers?

What if a setback wasn’t a loss, but a lesson?

What if a wrong turn wasn’t failure, but information?

What if disappointment wasn’t the end of the story, but an opportunity to adjust the strategy?

A learner can look at what happened, take what is useful, leave behind what isn’t, and try again.

And sometimes the learner becomes the winner.

Not because everything went according to plan, but because they refused to let one moment define the rest of their story.

Maybe that’s what winning in life really looks like.

Winning isn’t always the trophy, the title, the promotion, the money, or the applause.

Sometimes winning is having the wisdom to pause.

Sometimes winning is changing direction.

Sometimes winning is asking for help.

Sometimes winning is realizing that the plan you had isn’t the plan you need anymore.

And sometimes winning is sitting quietly with a warm cup in your hands and realizing:

I made it through that.

That’s a win.

So these days, when I make my coffee, tea, or cocoa, I like to think of that little dollop of frothy milk as more than decoration.

It’s a reminder.

A reminder to pause long enough to appreciate where I am.

To reflect on what I’ve learned.

To prioritize what deserves my attention.

To strategize about my next move.

And to enjoy the wins—especially the ones nobody else sees.

Because life isn’t a game where someone has to lose for someone else to win.

There are winners.

There are learners.

And there are people who are still figuring it out.

And maybe we’re all a little bit of each.

So go ahead.

Make the cup.

Add the froth.

Sit down.

Take a breath.

Reflect.

Prioritize.

Strategize.

And when you realize you’ve accomplished something—even something small—enjoy the win.

You’ve earned it.

After all, sometimes the best strategy for winning in life begins with simply taking a moment to savor the cup you’re holding.

When I was little I would love to use a straw to blow bubbles in my milk.
